Polyphia – Ego Death

Not sure when I discovered this band, Polyphia, but I want to say the middle of the last decade. As we all know I’m a metal guy, but there is also some other stuff on my playlist, like punk. Bands like Green Day or Bad Brains. But there is some other stuff not on my list that they played when I’m out in the wild, like Lizzo or Lady Gaga, I’m not going to complain because I think their songs are pretty good, they are talented, and deserve the attention. And even though most of the music I listen to is from the last two decades, I feel like metal really hasn’t been that innovative since the 90’s. Even thought so many of them and sound better, are more technical, more skilled, and heavier, I feel like not much has changed.

Don’t get me wrong, I love so many bands that started or grew in the 80’s, 90’s and after like In Flames, Arch Enemy, Blind Guardian, Within Temptation, Dimmu Borgir, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Rise Against, Jinjer, Trivium, and others. Now, I do have some other instrumental musicians I listen to, like Angel Vivaldi, or Sovereign, but Polyphia is something else completely.

And the fact they did a song with Steve Vai says a lot. And for those of you who don’t know who Steve Vai is, he is a guitar virtuoso form the 80’s. He worked with Frank Zappa who called him, “my little Italian virtuoso.” He was also recruited by David Lee Roth after he left Van Halen. He’s a pretty big deal. I can only imagine who was more excited bout working with who.
